A Question for James and Rupert Murdoch: What doth it profit a man to gain the News of the World and to lose his own soul?

Hello and welcome…..

Born In Cashel,Tipperary, I’m a Tudor historian, former fellow of the Institute of Historical Research and a writer. Currently I write novels, plays and old fashioned poetry….

Most of us like to think we are unusual enough to be interesting to others. It’s the endearing vanity of the human condition….

I love people: I love to meet, entertain, listen to, amuse and cook for others: cooking has been my lifetime’s other passion.

I’m a seriously good cook. Whether for one, four, fifteen, forty or a hundred giving people your food is an intimate gesture… giving your guests something of you. Cooking…listening to music…and a pinch of thinking….compose a perfectly synchronised ballet.

Cooking and ironing are the best times to listen to music; I love classical music the most, principally choral music and opera…but there’s always time to hear Ella Fitzgerald singing Cole Porter or Rogers and Hart.

Kitchens should also be as full of peals of laughter as apple peel. There’s no better place to combine the elements of life’s comedy and tragedy with hot gossip from friends than in the place where we conjure mere ingredients magically into more than a mere meal.

The rituals we’ve assembled around eating have a deliberately complex design and they reflect upon our sense of ourselves – holding a mirror to our collective understanding of what it means to be civilised. These rituals of food and hospitality are deeply resonant to our origins as a social animal.

The setting in which we eat reinforces our sense that our food and its sharing are profoundly special…

From dressing dining rooms to dressing rooms, interior design is another compelling interest. It’s led me to into the renovating houses with a life-long friend who shares the same passion, Richard. Currently we own a large five storey flat fronted Georgian house in London. It was an unloved office; we’ve made it a much loved home. It’s a great space… in which to entertain and to live.

From the roof garden there’s an amazing view of London – a panorama quirkily still surviving after 180 years.

Just living life makes for wonder and reflection. I write to reflect upon worlds I’ve read about;  historical figures who’ve been and gone; or, just the times I’ve lived though….I also love to watch what others think or have thought about this world of ours…that’s also given me a passion for live theatre – especially Shakespeare.

Richard, the co-owner is a collector with a passion for antiques – furniture, silver and china together with an eye for interiors and objects d’art and an ear for big bands…

So, these are amongst the things you’ll find here…but there’s more to it than this…

Please look around, take your time and by all means leave me a message…above all I hope you enjoy your visit and come back soon…..
